COURSE REFLECTION

Looking back on this semester in Specialized English 1, I can honestly say it was one of the most unexpectedly meaningful experiences I have had in school. I will not pretend that I walked in with a lot of confidence — reading-heavy courses have never really been my strong suit, and knowing that this class would demand a lot of it made me a little uneasy at first. But somewhere along the way, things shifted. The discomfort I felt at the start slowly turned into something I did not expect: a genuine appreciation for reading and for the process of working through a text until it finally makes sense.

The articles we were assigned throughout the course ranged from straightforward to genuinely challenging, and I think that range was part of what made the learning feel real. The Reading Process Worksheets were especially helpful in building a habit I never really had before: actually slowing down and re-reading. Before this class, I would skim through a passage, pick up what I could, and move on. The worksheets pushed me to go back, identify the key ideas, and ask what the author was really trying to say. It was tedious at first, but by the end of the semester, I found myself doing it almost naturally.

The Reader's Response Forms added another layer to the experience that I genuinely enjoyed. Rather than just absorbing what an article said, I was asked to respond to it — to share my own thoughts, react to the issues being raised, and sometimes even propose solutions. It made reading feel less passive and more like a conversation. I started to see the articles not just as texts to get through, but as starting points for thinking. Some of the topics stayed with me long after I had submitted the forms, and I think that says something about how effective the activity was.

Of course, no reflection would be complete without acknowledging Ms. Joanne Ruiz. She has a way of making even the most demanding material feel approachable. Her guidance throughout the course was patient and clear, and she never made anyone feel embarrassed for struggling. There were moments when I was genuinely confused by a passage, and her explanations always helped me find my footing again. I am grateful for the way she conducted the class — structured enough to keep us on track, but warm enough that it never felt intimidating.

All things considered, Specialized English 1 gave me more than I anticipated. I came in hoping to simply pass, and I am leaving with a skill set I will actually carry forward. The habit of reading carefully, thinking critically, and expressing my responses clearly are things I know I will keep using long after this semester ends. It was a challenging course, but it was the kind of challenge that makes you better — and for that, I am genuinely thankful.
